Legends Keep Growing about Tullymore's Award-Winning Layout
The unique design of Tullymore has been described by famed golf critic, Ron Whitten, of Golf Digest as having an Art Deco flavor with its greens and fairways that follow precise and parallel zigzags, its artistically shaped bunkers and its symmetrically repetitive mounding. That architectural artistry is only part of what will fascinate you during your round.
Like our other course, St. Ives, Tullymore is a golfing legend in the making that you will yearn to play again and again.
Subtle ups and downs make Tullymore a distinctive golfing adventure as you meander through 800 acres of wood and water on this tranquil course. Lakes lap the landscape and the Shinglebolt Creek winds through the course. The greens of Tullymore, guarded by oak sentinels, have an infinite variety of shapes and sizes making each hole a personal, unforgettable experience.
This is a course that has five par-3’s and five par-5’s. All our greens are very unique with distinctive sizes, shapes and widths. Conditions are always immaculate on our bentgrass tees, greens and fairways.
“Tullymore is a bedazzling golf course, a unique style of golf design that'simposed upon the landscape without being an imposition.”
– Ron Whitten, Golf Digest.
At Tullymore Golf Course, part of The Resorts of Tullymore & St. Ives, tee selection is very important because Tullymore has one of the highest slope ratings in Michigan. There is quite a large distance difference when playing the back tees compared to the front. It is important to choose which of the five tees is best for you in order to make your experience more enjoyable.
As you reach the first tee, you'll be looking out on a tree-lined fairway fringed with native grasses that narrows and then widens as it moves away from you. This is a great opener that is definitely a three-shot, par-5, measuring 550 yards from the back and 400 from the front tees.
You'll want to hit your driver off the tee; make the white birch in the distance your target. Then use an iron on your second shot and favor the left side of the fairway. For your third shot, you'll want to use an extra club to get over the bunkers near the green.
The toughest hole on our course is the 2nd, a longish par-4 playing at 456 yards from the back and 328 from the front. The long squiggly fairway bunker on the right is a trench to avoid with your tee shot and on your second shot. Precision is important with that approach shot because the green makes for a very narrow target.
No. 7, a par-3 playing at 198 from the back and 104 from the front, has one of the testiest greens on the course. Dramatic undulations on the green, which is 47 yards deep, make for four very unique possible pin placements.
Another great par-3 is the 12th, playing at 257 yards from the tips and 120 from the forward tees. Golfers and golf writers agree that this hole resembles the famous Dell Hole at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland because part of the green is tucked behind mounding that can obscure your target. However, our Dell Hole will be easier to handle because the green is much wider than what you aim for at Lahinch. There's a gentle knoll behind the hole so going long will not hurt you when you take what can be a blind shot at the pin.
The final three holes will leave you talking when you get back to the clubhouse. The 16th is a three-shot, par-5 that measures a demanding 608 yards from the back tees and 456 from the front. You'll be hitting your tee shot to a wide landing area with wetlands on the left, but lots of room on the right. For your second shot you'll want to hit a fairway wood. This hole is a dogleg left, but watch out for the marshy areas again on the left. For your approach, you'll be hitting over bunkers to the green.
The 17th, a 375-yard par-4 (217 yards from the front) you'll need to carry more wetlands on the right. After a carry of 200 yards or more, be sure to stay to the left. You'll be hitting into a narrow green with bunkers on each side.
Our most outstanding par-5 at Tullymore is definitely our finishing hole, measuring 535 yards from the back and 346 from the front. This is a hole that is considered to be our most photogenic and was also called “one of the greatest finishing holes in Michigan” by Golf Chicago. The 18th is a great birdie opportunity for those who can get to the green in two by going over a corner of the lake on the left. But strategy is important here as well. Once you've carried the water, you'll be traveling along a gradual dogleg left to the green.
Distances, slopes and ratings at the par-72 Tullymore: 7,250 yards (75/150); 6,547 (71.2/142); 6,210 (69.5/135); 5,550 (67.0/115); 4,668 (66.8/115).
